Rainy days can make it hard to stay active, but they are a great chance to focus on your core. A strong core helps with balance, posture, and preventing injury. At active acadia Physical Therapy, we are often reminded that you don’t need a gym or fancy gear to build strength. You can get a great workout right at home.
Below are five simple core exercises you can do indoors, no equipment needed.

Why Core Strength Matters
Your core is more than just your abs. It includes your back, hips, and pelvis. These muscles support your spine and help you move safely. Weak core muscles can lead to pain and poor posture. That’s why Physical Therapists at active acadia Physical Therapy often include core training in recovery plans. These exercises are safe for most people but, please check with your healthcare provider before starting the following exercises:
1. Plank Hold
Start on your forearms and knees, then step your feet back. Keep your body in a straight line from head to heels. Hold this position for 10 - 30 seconds.
Tip: Don’t let your hips sag. Keep your core tight and steady.
2. Dead Bug
Lie on your back engage your core muscles "zip up tight pants feeling" and with arms and legs in the air. Slowly lower your right arm and left leg toward the floor, then return to center. Switch sides.
Tip: Move slowly and keep your lower back pressed into the floor.
3. Glute Bridge
Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Push through your heels and lift your hips up. Hold for a few seconds, then lower down.
Tip: Squeeze your buttock muscles
4. Bird Dog
Start on your hands and knees. Extend your right arm and left leg at the same time. Hold briefly, then switch sides.
Tip: Keep your back flat and avoid twisting your body.
5. Trunk Extension
Lay on your stomach, attempt to lift the top half of your body up with your arms at your side
Tip: Keep your hips down
Stay Consistent Indoors
Even short workouts can make a big difference if you stay consistent. Aim for 5-10 minutes a day.
At active acadia Physical Therapy, we believe that simple habits lead to strong, healthy bodies. Rainy days don’t have to stop your progress—they can help you build a better foundation.
