Staying active as you get older is one of the best things you can do for your health. Physical Therapy can play a big role in helping you move better, feel stronger, and stay independent. At active acadia Physical Therapy, our goal is to help you age with confidence by building strength, balance, and healthy movement habits.

One of the most important parts of healthy aging is keeping your muscles and bones strong. Many older adults hear about osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become weak. Specific exercises—designed by a trained Physical Therapist, like those at active acadia Physical Therapy—can help you stay stronger.
Please ask your healthcare provider or Physical therapist before starting the following exercise with extension-based training for bone and muscle health.
Trunk Extension Endurance Exercise
Your spine is one of the main areas affected by osteoporosis, and keeping your back muscles strong can protect it. A trunk extension endurance exercise helps build the muscles that support the spine.Your Physical Therapist may have you lie face-down, gently lift your chest a few inches, and hold that position. This simple movement trains the muscles that keep your posture upright and reduces the risk of spinal fractures. Over time, improving endurance in these muscles can help you stand taller, move with more confidence, and feel less back fatigue.
Head and Shoulder Press Exercise
Another helpful exercise for bone and posture health is the head press combined with a shoulder press. This exercise teaches you to activate the deep muscles of the neck and upper back. You may start by pressing the back of your head gently into a pillow or wall while keeping your chin level. Then you add a shoulder press by drawing your shoulder blades down and back. These movements improve posture, reduce neck strain, and strengthen the upper body—all areas that weaken with age if not trained properly. Better posture also keeps your spine safe and reduces fall risk.
Weight Training for Bone Strength
Weight training is one of the most effective ways to prevent osteoporosis because bone and muscle grow stronger when they are challenged. Your Physical Therapist may use resistance, or body-weight exercises to safely load your muscles and bones.Even small increases in strength can make everyday activities easier, such as climbing stairs, carrying groceries, and getting up from a chair.
At active acadia Physical Therapy, we create personalized exercise programs that help you stay strong and active.
