Good posture isn’t just about standing tall — it’s about keeping your body in balance so you move, breathe, and feel your best. At active acadia Physical Therapy, we help you learn ways to strengthen your posture every day. Here are five simple daily habits that can make a big difference — especially as we head into early winter and prepare for outdoor activities like skating!

Stay active with active acadia Physical Therapy in Lamoine Maine

1. Start Your Morning with Movement

Before diving into your day, take less than five minutes to move your shoulders, and back. Gentle exercise such as shoulder rolls, and sit tall- slouch can help loosen muscles that tighten overnight. These repeated movements prepare your body for better posture — and they’re a great warm-up before pulling on skates or boots for winter fun.

2. Check Your Sitting Posture

If you sit at a desk or study table, be sure your eye are looking at the top 1/3rd of your computer screen and your feet are grounded on the floor. Try to keep your shoulders relaxed and your low mid back supported with a small rolled towel. Set a 30 minute timer or reminder to stand up and move, changing your position.

3. Strengthen Your Core Daily

A strong core supports your spine and helps you stay balanced. Your core is not just the abdominal muscle in front; but, a ring of support muscles in front, sides and back. You don’t need a gym — just 10 minutes of planks, bridges, or standing balance exercises can help. These same muscles help you prepare for skating or shoveling snow season. Book an appointment with specialists at active acadia Physical Therapy to design an individual exercise routine specific to your body.

4. Think before you Move During Winter Activities

As temperatures drop, many of us enjoy skating, skiing, or brisk walks outdoors. Do light warm up exercises before heading outside.

5. End Your Day with Posture Reflection

Before bed, do a quick “posture check.” Were you slouching while texting or leaning forward at your computer? Awareness is the first step toward improvement. In bed try laying flat on your back without a pillow taking a few deep breaths to release body tension at the end of your day.

By adding these small habits into your day, you can keep your spine healthy and your body ready for all your favorite winter activities. For personalized posture advice or winter injury prevention tips, contact active acadia Physical Therapy today — our specialists are here to help you.
